Barclays Uber Credit Card Review (Discontinued)

The Uber Credit Card Review

2020.6 Update: It seems this card is removed from Barclays and Uber, and previous application links are dead. Probably it’s discontinued? Not sure what’s going on. If you want a substitute, you may consider US Bank Altitude Go which is also a no fee card with 4% cashback on dining.

2019.11 Update: The following changes are now effective:

  • The rewards structure will be: 5% on Uber, 3% on dining, airfare, and hotels, and 1% on all other purchases.
  • The rewards will be Uber cash, not statement credit & gift cards.
  • $50 subscription credit will be removed.

Application Link

  • This card no longer accepts new applications. If you have this legacy credit card, you can still enjoy its original benefits.

Benefits

  1. $100 offer: earn $100 after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days.
  2. Earn 5% back on Uber; 3% back on restaurants, airfare, and hotels; 1% back on all other purchases.
  3. Up to $600 in mobile phone protection including damage and theft when you use your Uber Visa Card to pay your monthly mobile phone bill.
  4. No foreign transaction fee.
  5. No annual fee.

Disadvantages

  1. Barclaycard credit cards are not so easy to get approved.
  2. The rewards are Uber cash, not actual cash (statement credit).

Recommended Application Time

  1. Barclays value the number of recent hard pulls a lot, we recommend you apply when you have less than 6 hard pulls in the past 6 months.
  2. We recommend you apply for this card after you have a credit history of at least one year.
  3. Existing cardmembers, existing accounts, and previous cardmember with accounts closed in the past 24 months may not be eligible for this offer.

Summary

This card used to be great with 4% rewards on dining, but after 2019.11 the return on dining is now 3%. It is still a decent card to earn rewards on the 3% and 5% categories with no annual fee, it is just not a great card any more.

Benefits before 2019.11

Features

  1. $100 offer: earn $100 after spending $500 on purchases in the first 90 days.
  2. Earn 4% back on restaurants, takeout, and bars, including UberEATS; 3% back on airfare, hotels, and vacation home rentals; 2% back on online purchases including Uber, online shopping, video and music streaming services; 1% back on all other purchases.
  3. Up to a $50 credit for online subscription services after you spend $5,000 on your card per account year. Amazon Prime membership is also included!
  4. Up to $600 in mobile phone protection including damage and theft when you use your Uber Visa Card to pay your monthly mobile phone bill.
  5. No foreign transaction fee.
  6. No annual fee.

Summary

As a no annual fee card, it is really decent. 4% cashback on restaurants, 3% cashback on travel, both are the best cashback rate among those no fee cards. It’s strange that it only offers 2% cashback on Uber itself. If you like no fee cards, this card is definitely worth considering.

According to NYTimes, Barclaycard and Uber are planning to add airline partners in 2018. If Uber can really build a point system that can be transferred to airline miles, then this card will be really powerful! Of course, the assumption is 1:1 to major airlines. No more details are available for now, let’s hope for the best!
